Most students enjoy getting out of their seats and doing their work in another part of the class, whether that be with a group or individually. If managed well, it can be a win-win for students learning and working happily and teachers facilitating strong math dialogue. I focused on activities that were relatively low-prep. Discussions are the cornerstone of my teaching style. We end up with the same speakers sharing their strongly held opinions while the rest of the class sits with glazed eyes. One set of students stays sitting in chairs while the other group rotates around. When the buzzer rings, they move on. There is a small amount of prep that goes into this.

Then, I have them put their bookbags against the walls so everyone can move around the room more easily. I also tell them to be a good date by talking and helping each other out. Occasionally I will have an odd number, then I just put three people at one table. I think it works so well for two reasons. First, the kids are moving all period long, which helps them stay alert. Second, they are working with a new partner for each problem.
