Students do so much sitting in a day. Math review games allow students time to get up and move. Most students enjoy getting out of their seats and doing their work in another part of the class, whether that be with a group or individually. If managed well, it can be a win-win for students learning and working happily and teachers facilitating strong math dialogue. I focused on activities that were relatively low-prep. Many of these activities are included in the Maneuvering the Middle curriculum or can be purchased here, but I am going to explain how you might prepare for and execute these activities if you are not a middle school math teacher. The flyswatter game was around when I was a student. I remember playing it in Spanish!

Students completed brief surveys after each project-sharing session, and a sampling of sessions was observed by a trained researcher.

I made these directions based on the original blog post and went through them with the students ahead of time.

Solve and become the expert on that problem for the day. If you have a question, ask your speed dating partner.

Is “Speed Dating” More Engaging than Serial Presentations?

Discussions are the cornerstone of my teaching style. We end up with the same speakers sharing their strongly held opinions while the rest of the class sits with glazed eyes. One set of students stays sitting in chairs while the other group rotates around. When the buzzer rings, they move on. There is a small amount of prep that goes into this.

I do it a bit differently than it has been done in math classes previously. They each work on individual whiteboards, but talk together while working. I walk around and answer questions while they work. After we finish each problem, one person at each table rotates to the next table. The same people move all period. I usually have them do a quick rock, paper, scissors, to determine who has to move. I usually have the students put everything away and clear off all of the tables.

Then, I have them put their bookbags against the walls so everyone can move around the room more easily. I also tell them to be a good date by talking and helping each other out. Occasionally I will have an odd number, then I just put three people at one table. I think it works so well for two reasons. First, the kids are moving all period long, which helps them stay alert. Second, they are working with a new partner for each problem.

I was just never sure how to make it work for ME.

As a secondary social studies teacher, I had to become extra creative in order to find ways to make learning historical content and skills fun and exciting.
